"Columbia's Noblest Sons"
Lithograph by Henry and William Voight, New York, 1865. The figure of Liberty, with her foot on the British lion, crowns Washington and Lincoln with laurel wreaths. The vignettes to the left of Washington depict events of the Revolutionary War (the Boston Tea Party, Declaration of Independence, and surrender of the British) while those to the right of Lincoln depict events of the Civil War (firing on Fort Sumter, deployment of the ironclad Monitor, and Lincoln's triumphal ride into Richmond after its capture by Union troops).
The image of Lincoln is based on a photograph taken by Anthony Berger at the Brady gallery, February 9, 1864. This photograph was also adapted for use on the five dollar bill.
