MILTON, MA – January 26, 2024 – The Forbes House Museum is hosting a workshop on Sunday, February 11, and offering special house tours at 215 Adams Street all month long to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon.
Local artist Rayna Lo, who’s previously led popular calligraphy classes at the museum, is returning to lead a workshop for creating New Year red envelopes, which symbolize good wishes and luck for the year ahead.
“Start the Year of the Dragon by learning how to make your own custom Lunar New Year red envelopes!” says Lo. “You’ll go on an artistic journey with step-by-step instructions for drawing dragon characters, and then cutting, folding, and decorating your red envelopes. This workshop is great for beginners with little to no artistic experience.”
Registration for the workshop, 2-4 pm, is $40/person, including supplies and refreshments. Children 7-12 are welcome when accompanied by an adult or caregiver. Tickets are available at https://www.forbeshousemuseum.org/celebrate-the-year-of-the-dragon-at-fhm/
“Rayna has a gift for taking a contemporary approach to Asian traditions in a way that’s approachable and authentic,” says Heidi Vaughan, the museum’s executive director. “We’re delighted to again host Rayna for what will be a fun and educational afternoon.”
Also in celebration of the Year of the Dragon, which begins February 10, the museum is offering a new guided tour, focused on Chinese symbolism, culture and Lunar New Year traditions, Thursdays-Saturdays at 11 am and 2 pm throughout February. Admission is included with the workshop; tickets for just the tour are free for members, $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Bring the family on Saturdays for a New Year-themed activity and self-guided craft as part of this month’s special programming. Walk-ins are welcome or call 617-696-1815 to reserve your space.
