Thomas Murdock, builder of the Mary Bowditch Forbes log cabin, was born in Easton, MA, in 1859. He was the second son of Frank and Bridget (Gallagher) Murdock, originally from Donegal, Ireland. The family first settled in Canton, MA, then moved to Lower Mills, Dorchester in 1887. In 1890, having begun to work as a carpenter, Thomas Murdock constructed a 2 ½ storey house for the family in Voses' Grove (now Ventura Park, Lower Mills). He was a tall and rather lanky built man, who, because of his his trade, naturally had to climb ladders and work on roofs from which he had many falls over the course of the years. He was a fine, honest, conscientious man; a good practicing Catholic who never married. Sometime after the death of his mother in 1910, Murdock moved with his sister, Mary, to Milton, eventually building a house on Pleasant Street. He died in Milton in 1954 at the age of 95.
