Description:
"The army of the Potomac advancing towards Richmond encountered the enemy entrenched at Coal Harbor, on June 1st about half past five A.M. The order was given to charge the Rebel works, and the Union troops advanced under a heavy fire of grape and cannister, driving the rebels before them and taking the position, which was firmly held in spite of the enemys desperate efforts to regain it."
"During the fierce battle at Coal Harbor, also called Cold Harbor, of June 3, 1864, 8,500 soldiers died during only eight minutes of fighting, thus giving the battle the tragic reputation of having the bloodiest eight minutes of the War.
Legend is that Cold Harbor, VA, was so named after a nearby tavern that did not serve hot meals."
